Mindprint Expert Review

Super Genius Compound Words is a matching card game with the primary objective to provide a fun alternative to begin recognizing and reading 30 compound words such as eyelid, headphone and bookshelf. Cards use a combination of colorful pictures and brightly colored words to help students draw connections between the word meanings and their spellings. The games exercise a variety of skills including visual scanning and working memory as students scan their cards for the words and associated pictures, as well as abstract and verbal reasoning as students need to shift from thinking of the compound word broken into two images to thinking of it as a compound word with its own meaning. Most of the six game varieties also depend on processing speed, verbal memory, visual memory, and attention as students race to be the first to remember words on their cards. Adults will want to help students choose the appropriate game for the specific students' skill levels and needs, and, when appropriate, coach the student by playing together. Older students in the given age range will be able to play the games independently once they have been over it with an adult, but they might find some of the memory games taxing or not sufficiently engaging. Overall, with the appropriate support, these educational games can be a much more fun way to practice compound words than worksheets, but the appropriateness will depend on how comfortable a student is with the many cognitive skills required to be successful.
