Mindprint Expert Review

Pros

  • The site presents objective data as well as multiple points of view on a broad variety of topical issues.
  • The site is free to use, non-profit, and advertising free which reduces any bias.
  • Inherently emphasizes the importance of facts through the site's reliance on data, citations for its own sources, and providing students with an easy way to cite the website.

Considerations

  • The site covers topics such as gun violence and other social issues that might not be appropriate for some elementary/middle school students to read without adult supervision.
  • The arguments are written at a high school reading level only and there is no optional vocabulary look up or simplified explanation.
  • The site has a very busy layout and no option to save articles.

Mindprint Expert Review

ProCon.org is a non-profit news site with a mission of providing multiple points of view on a broad range of debatable topics including election politics, science news, sports and entertainment. Each issue is introduced as a question with a yes/no answer, i.e. "Should....?" followed by one page of factual background information. That is followed by the pro and con views of each issue with appropriate links and citations. The site makes an effort to eliminate bias by equally representing both sides of the issue. In the case of politics, they present an issue and then quote the candidates views on the sources. There are links to relevant videos and "did you know" related factual information. The site is text heavy with a busy layout which could make the amount of information feel overwhelming. However, it is unique in that it covers topical issues with in-depth information on different viewpoints to help students understand the multi-dimensional aspects of key societal issues and develop broader perspectives.
