Mindprint Expert Review

Pros

  • Exercises visual, spatial and flexible thinking skills through a series of progressively difficult puzzles.
  • Just interpreting the clues can develop good visual reasoning skills, even without solving the puzzles.
  • Attractive, simple game pieces.

Considerations

  • Puzzles quickly progress in difficulty and can be very taxing on working memory and reasoning skills.
  • Students could easily misinterpret or simply not understand the visual clues which could cause frustration. One-to-one support from an adult will be needed for most upper elementary and middle school students.
  • Even looking at the answers in the back can overload students with weaker visual or scanning skills.

Mindprint Expert Review

Smart Cookies is a challenging single player visual logic game with a cookie theme. There are 64 different puzzles that gradually increase in difficulty. Every puzzle requires placing nine cookies in 3 shapes and 3 "flavors" on a 3x3 grid by using up to nine visual clues. For each puzzle, the clues are presented as a series of pictures which show where a shape should or should not be placed on the grid and/or relative to other pieces. Players will need to use their visual reasoning, flexible thinking and working memory as they juggle the different possibilities. The 64 puzzles are divided into eight levels so players can work through the puzzles as they progress in difficulty. After just a few puzzles, even children and adults with advanced skills will be challenged. Solutions to the puzzles are in the back of the book and can be a helpful reference for interpreting the clues which are not always obvious.

Smart Cookies provides great practice in developing and challenging important critical thinking skills. However, with the exception of some students who are especially interested in logic puzzles, students might find the puzzles too challenging to do for pleasure. And while the cookie pieces are attractive, they do not add sufficient fun to what is a complex logic challenge. Smart Cookies can be a great choice for a classroom challenge led by the teacher, or one-on-one with an adult to teach and develop logic and abstract reasoning skills, but unless a student chooses, should be limited to one or two puzzles at a time.
