Write Notes in the Margin on Tests to Remember Key Information

If your student studied hard but is worried about forgetting key information during a test

How To Apply It!

  1. Jot notes to yourself at the start of the test to be sure that you do not forget something really important or if you are very anxious that you might forget key information.
  2. You might feel hesitant, but it is almost always allowable, even on standardized tests, to write notes to yourself in the margins or on scrap paper.
  3. As soon as you receive the test paper jot down the most important formulas, definitions or other information you are concerned you might forget. Consider using a different color pen or pencil to distinguish it so you can easily find it as needed during the test.
  4. When answering multiple choice or true/false questions, jot down the reason that you chose or eliminated an answer on a challenging question. When you have time to check your work, you will remember your thought process.
  5. Don't erase your notes at the end of the test. Save your work. If you had the right answer, teachers will not mark off for your notes. However, if you had the wrong answer, but a teacher reads the notes and understands your thought process, you might receive partial credit.

Why It Works (the Science Of Learning)!

Anxiety makes people forgetful so be prepared. Unless a teacher explicitly says not to take notes on the test, there is no reason you cannot help your own recall by jotting down important information from memory at the start of the test or by using notes during problem solving to help you check your work when you finish.
