Mindprint Expert Review

Pros

  • The workbook uses nice large fonts without too many words on a page, making it easier for younger readers.
  • Students must examine individual vocabulary words and use their own "visual imagery" to think through the solutions.
  • Although designed for the classroom, this workbook is a great at home option to develop critical language skills.

Considerations

  • This workbook is not visually appealing for a child in the target age range, so adults might need to provide some of their own visual incentives.

Mindprint Expert Review

This is a unique workbook that offers spelling and vocabulary practice through a series of age-appropriate riddles. Each page includes three, two-part riddles, with students expected to answer the question "What am I?" at the end of each. This workbook is a great way to help students make connections between words, ideas, and concepts, since the riddles are fun and the child must carefully examine individual vocabulary words, make word associations, and spell correctly in order to solve the riddles. Since each answer requires the student to rhyme, the book will help students with word sounds and spelling. The book was designed for classroom use, so they pages are basic black and white and do not feel appealing, but an adult could easily sit down with a child and make doing these riddles a fun experience. Adults should also be prepared to help with any unfamiliar words and to help students think through answers. Overall, a very fun choice that will develop some critical verbal skills.

Manufacturer Description

Spelling DooRiddles, a line of Dr. Doolittle's DooRiddles, develops both the visual and phonetic aspects of spelling and vocabulary. Students use associative reasoning, reading comprehension, and spelling skills to solve the two part riddles. Students analyze the first part of the riddle to identify the target word. Next, they read the second part of the riddle to determine whether to add, delete, or change the letters of the target word to produce the second word and solve the riddle. Each book includes practice activities, suggestions, and answers.
