Mindprint Expert Review

Pros

  • An engaging hands-on learning activity in which students will enjoy results in a few simple steps.
  • Students will gain practice following a short sequence of instructions, while having the opportunity to get creative with decorating their robot.
  • Students are encouraged to experiment and observe by attaching different kinds of legs and placing the motor and battery holder on different parts of the cup.

Considerations

  • The kit comes with step-by-step instructions and a link to download the Motorized Bot lesson plan by grade. Adults can either follow the full lesson plan or use the information and vocabulary definitions as appropriate depending on the student's age and goal for the activity.
  • Younger students will need some help managing the tape and placing the heavier motor and battery pack on the light cup in a way that will stay. Part of the learning process is to figure out best placement of the materials, but just enough adult support will reduce frustration.

Mindprint Expert Review

KitHub's Motorized Bot kit is a unique hands-on robotics activity for students to complete with a parent or teacher, and teaches students about simple circuits. The kit includes a motor, battery, light and instructions for building a simple moving robot. Upon purchasing, adults will receive a link to download a lesson plan including explanation of the electronics concepts (how and why) and related vocabulary. In only a few steps, including connecting a motor and an LED light, student will see their robot move. While there are limited steps, adults will likely need to walk the student through each step because of unfamiliar vocabulary. Younger students also might need help with the mechanics of assembling the robot, including cutting and securing the tape to properly hold up the relatively heavy motor to the light paper cup. Students with weaker fine motor skills or who have difficulty with spatial relations or construction projects might need more support. Students will enjoy decorating their robots and experimenting with adding different types of legs and seeing how that changes the robot's movement. The materials provided are simple and authentic, which adds to the home-made feeling of the experience and accomplishment of making something oneself. With the appropriate adult support and encouragement, this will be an interesting and motivating first robotics activity for students. KitHub offers many other engineering and electronics kits for a range of ages for home and school.

Manufacturer Description

The Motorized ArtBot kit comes with everything you need to get kids started with creative robotics. Build your own personal, lovable bot that will take off as soon as you power it on and will definitely make a mess if you let it. Every bot is as unique as the young innovator that makes it, no two are alike! With this project, kids will learn how to turn on a hobby motor, light-up an LED, create a simple circuit and use their imaginations to decorate their new small pal. Add a few markers, stick the bot on a piece of paper and it will draw spirals. Add a sponge, dip it into paint and it's transformed into a painting bot. Recommended for ages 5 and up.
