This is an excellent app for helping students conceptually understand multi-digit addition and subtraction in a child-friendly format. The screen is colorful and uses large numbers appropriate for elementary school students. Students can type in an equation of their own or randomly generate a problem. They see a display that demonstrates the concept of carrying using ten blocks on one side of the screen and the traditional rubric on the left side. Students must slide the appropriate digits together to perform the operation but the app does all the calculations, making this a great option for students who still do not have math fact fluency have the opportunity to learn the concepts of multi-digit math. For each calculation, students are able to watch it visually performed with the ten blocks first and then in the traditional rubric. Adults can set the appropriate pace for the student. However, since students are never required to solve independently, they could slide numbers to solve problems without understanding why and not deepen their understanding. Adults will want to check-in with students using this app and ensure they are deepening their conceptual understanding. Overall, this can be a fantastic app to have students gain a strong conceptual understanding of multi-digit addition and subtraction, regardless of whether or not they have mastered their math facts.
