Use Speed Groups to Practice Presentations

All students, particularly those who are nervous about presentations

How To Apply It!

  1. Use speed learning groups to give students a lower stakes and less intimidating opportunity to practice their presentation skills.
  2. As the culmination of a project, break students into groups of four or five students. Each student will have the opportunity to be the presenter while the others are listeners.
  3. After the presenter finishes, the listeners ask questions and provide constructive feedback.
  4. Each student then has the opportunity to present to the teacher, either in the same group or as a class.
  5. Since everyone in the group has the opportunity to present, students are more likely to be supportive of each other and provide constructive feedback so they receive helpful feedback on their turns.
  6. Students learn to take feedback and improve their performance.
  7. Students become more self-aware of their own presentation skills as they give feedback to peers.

Why It Works (the Science Of Learning)!

Students rarely have an opportunity to present to an audience, take feedback on their presentation and then improve. As a result, they rarely are able to see growth in their oral communication skills and gain the confidence they need. By allowing students to present the same material multiple times they are able to quickly experience growth and gain confidence while improving their own knowledge through peer teaching.
