Pros

  • The strips look like bookmarks, so students would feel comfortable using them at school.
  • The strips are sturdy and are unlikely to break or tear.
  • Students can pick from a variety of colors.

Considerations

  • Reading strips can slow down overall reading pace, so they are best for students who have difficulties and not for all students.
  • Students might need practice using them before they are effective.

Mindprint Expert Review

Reading guide strips are designed to help students with reading difficulties focus their eyes on a limited amount of text at a time. They can be particularly helpful for students who might be prone to skipping words, skipping lines, losing their place, re-reading lines, or having general fatigue while reading. Reading guide strips are transparent colored plastic strips 8.5" long with a colorful, see-through strip in the middle. The strips come in different widths so a narrow 1 1/2" strip is good for reading a line in a book and a wider 3 3/4" strip is recommended for reading textbooks or math. Students slowly move the transparent colored strips as they read to focus on words, phrases, or paragraphs. The lines above and below the strip are blocked so the child can focus. The manufacturer recommends blue or yellow to improve concentration, but the strips come in a variety of colors and students might have specific preferences for contrast. Reading strips might not help all students, but they can be worth trying for students who need help reading more efficiently.
