Provide Copies of Class Notes

If your student has difficulty both taking notes and participating or paying attention during class, particularly because of slower processing, attention or working memory

Teach It!

  1. Objective: Provide a written copy of class notes to students who have difficulty keeping pace with the discussion so they can focus their energy on listening and understanding key information.
  2. Teacher Takeaways: a) Ahead of Class: Provide notes for students to read ahead of time so they are familiar with what will be covered and can focus on understanding in class. Highlight key concepts and vocabulary. b) After class: Alternatively, providing notes after the class is finished makes sense if you are writing out the notes or presenting problems during class. You might still direct the student to take notes for practice, but they will be more relaxed and able to listen if they know they will get the teacher notes afterwards.
  3. Considerations: This is also an opportunity to model well-organized and effective note taking.

Why It Works (the Science Of Learning)!

Student with weaker executive functions or processing can have difficulty juggling the need to listen, understand, synthesize and take notes. Weaker processing or executive functions can make it hard for students to take efficient notes, even when they understand. Providing students with a written copy of class notes enables them to keep pace with the discussion and lessen anxiety about missing key information.
