Mindprint Expert Review

Pros

  • Finished timelines look beautiful and may include videos, photos, maps and more.
  • Timelines are useful for students who need help organizing their ideas visually or remember better with visuals.

Considerations

  • Students might need a lot of support if they are unfamiliar with Google spreadsheets.
  • Timelines must be published publicly in order to create them.
  • There is no way to view a summary of events to put them in context; instead students must view events sequentially.

Mindprint Expert Review

This is an unusual free website for those who are comfortable using google spreadsheets to create virtual timelines as a series of visual slides. The site has built in support to pull in media from Twitter, YouTube, Google Maps, Wikipedia and more which will makes the timeline more visually appealing. Students will need to download the Google spreadsheet template provided by the site and follow the instructions to add dates, content/text and links to media. Students comfortable using Google spreadsheets will find the template straight-forward and will be pleased with how they can generate their own unique timeline with a unique URL using web-based content. Students must follow the template exactly to add a title page, and up to 1,000 events with a date, description and an optional media link and caption. The site will automatically create the timeline with the title sheet first followed by each event page in chronological order. Timelines are all public and can be saved or shared. Visual timelines can help some students understand, organize and remember sequential information better than straight text, and they can be a useful addition to some projects. Overall, this is good free site for students comfortable with Google spreadsheets to create attractive virtual timelines but others might prefer easier drag and drop templates.
