Teach It!

  1. Objective: Students will become independent in using recommended study strategies as they gain practice and realize the benefits.
  2. Instruction: a) When introducing a strategy, explain the "why" first. Will it help the student save time? Understand better? Make work easier? b) Teach the strategy in steps. Offer personal examples as you go. c) Print the Mindprint strategy and put it in the student's notebook or on the desk. d) Provide students opportunities to practice the strategy in class. This can be in small groups of students who will use the same strategy. Have them model for each other. e) Let students see you using the strategy. Comment that you are using the strategy by name and why it is valuable in a given situation.
  3. Ongoing Reinforcement: Using strategies requires an initial investment of time and effort so make it worthwhile. We are all prone to forgetting what we do not practice. Remind students to use the strategy. When they use the strategy, recognize the student in a positive way. This is particularly important for younger students and for strategies that are needed less frequently.
