Pre-Teach Key Vocabulary

If your student is reading a text where unfamiliar vocabulary is key to comprehension

Instruction And Practice

  1. Objective: Provide students with key vocabulary words prior to reading to support their understanding of the text.
  2. Direct Instruction: a) Provide students with a list of vocabulary words from a text they will be reading. b) Have students look up and write their own definition, or provide the definition for them. Practice the word(s) in context to ensure they have a good understanding before reading. c) Place the words on a word wall visible for the students to reference as they read.
  3. Teacher Notes: a) While this strategy can work for any text, it might be most useful in subjects like science or social studies, where understanding a few key terms is essential for overall comprehension. b) Vocabulary webs or graphic organizers can be a good alternative if there are a few very important words. Place the word in the center and visually show the relationship between the key word and related words, ideas and concepts.

  1. Look up the words that the teacher provided and write down the definition. Draw a picture if it helps
  2. Use the word in a sentence to ensure you fully understand it
  3. When you come across that word in your reading, pause to make sure it makes sense to you in context. Refer back to the definition you wrote down if you need a reminder

Reading a complex text, particularly in non-fiction, relies on a variety of cognitive processes. By helping students understand key vocabulary before reading, they free up additional capacity for understanding the text rather than using a lot of mental energy on a few key difficult terms.
