"Speak" to Your Audience to Write Effectively

If your student has ideas for what to write about but still struggles to start writing

Teach It!

  1. Objective: Students will say their writing ideas out loud so they can hear themselves think through the idea and then more easily get them down on paper.
  2. Instruction and Practice: a) Have students practice speaking their ideas for writing either to themselves, a classmate or a teacher. They can even record it. Explain to students that after they hear their ideas and like how they sound, it becomes easier to write them down. They can also bounce their ideas off of the listener. b) Encourage students to picture their audience while they speak. What do they need to know? Want to know?
  3. Considerations: The language we speak is less formal than the language we use to write. Also, when we speak, we gesture and point and don't always need to use language that is as descriptive. Once students have ideas and purpose written, explain to them why it is important to edit their language for proper writing mechanics.

Why It Works (the Science Of Learning)!

Everyone writes better when they are interested in the topic and knows there is an authentic audience that is interested in learning from them. Create your own audience for your writing, even if your teacher doesn't ask you to, and speak to that audience. It will help you crystallize what you want to communicate.
