Writing Tips for Engaging Readers

If your student's writing mechanics are good and they want to improve the overall quality

Teach It!

  1. Objective: Students will take their writing to the next level and will engage their audience by keeping these ideas in mind.
  2. Instruction and Practice: Use the student guide (next slide) to teach students how to make their writing more engaging and interesting.

*students* Guide: Engage Your Readers

  1. Novelty. Tell your reader something they don't expect by including surprising facts, unique style and tone, or an unusual topic. These are all good ways to capture your reader's attention.
  2. Relevancy. Include information that will make the paper interesting to a lot of people, not just those who have a specific interest in your topic. Is there a way that the topic relates to current events? Common feelings or needs? Consider why you chose this topic and what made it interesting to you. How can you make it equally relevant to your reader?
  3. Start off Strong. Put extra effort into your title and topic sentence. If you can engage your reader from the beginning, you are more likely to keep their attention. Shorter is often better to capture the attention of a broad audience.
  4. Share Something New. When the reader finishes your paper, what did he learn? Is it worth remembering and sharing with others? You know you have achieved success when your reader has learned from you and wants to share those learnings with others.

Why It Works (the Science Of Learning)!

The inherent reward in good writing is that others learn from you. These key strategies will increase the likelihood that others will want to read your writing.
