Expressive Language Social Awareness

Mindprint Expert Review

Pros

  • Can create student engagement and enthusiasm that teachers might have difficulty generating with text-only media or with more introverted students.
  • Teachers can use the videos in advance of the next lesson to more effectively support students' questions and needs.
  • Gives all students practice with oral communication skills.

Considerations

  • As with all social media, videos need to be monitored for appropriate content and tone. Flipgrid does enable teachers to pre-approve posts.
  • Not all students might be comfortable or have the technology to make videos from home.
  • Watching and creating videos takes more time than reading and writing text comments, so teachers will want to be sure the time students are spending is meaningful to the goal of the lesson or activity.

Mindprint Expert Review

FlipGrid can be a fun and effective classroom or group collaboration tool to enable students to share with each other via short video clips. Teachers can use it for a class or small group throughout the semester, or students can create a group for a project or study group. Anyone can pose a text question or prompt for the group and then others respond as appropriate. Teachers often use Flipgrid for "getting to know you" exercises at the beginning of the school year or for challenging homework problems so students can post while at home and teachers can prepare for class the next day. Videos can be more effective than sharing in text/written messages, especially when students need help with challenging math or science problems that benefit from using visual aids. Flipgrid also can be an effective option to engage more introverted students who might be more willing to participate given the time to think through their responses and re-record as often as they need, and to help other students become better at listening to their peers. Features such as the option to give students feedback on their communication skills, set the length of the video from 30 seconds to 5 minutes, and to add other videos, links and integrate into google classroom make this an overall effective and easy-to-use platform when all users participate as expected.
