This is an excellent reference book for parents and educators working with twice-exceptional (2e) children, children who are gifted learners but also have a learning disability. The authors provide detailed explanations of the scientific and observable behavioral strengths and challenges faced by 2e students along with specific strategies and opportunities to support these complex learners. The authors emphasize the unique overlapping academic, social and emotional strengths and needs, with a particular emphasis on conflicting behaviors, e.g. "She's so smart, but can't finish her homework." The book includes plenty of case studies, examples, and tools to help adults understand and support this unique population of students, including how to avoid common misdiagnoses and how to create an IEP or 504 Plan to meet their complex needs. The overriding message throughout the book is to understand the student's strengths and deficits, but to pay far more attention to their strengths than is given in traditional educational environments.
