Mindprint Expert Review

Pros

  • The book takes what could be a very open-ended process and provides an organizational framework so teachers and students can make the time productive.
  • A very practical and good reference as teachers work to optimize the process in their individual classrooms.
  • Ideas for incorporating specific technology are included throughout the book.

Considerations

  • The book is written for teachers of gifted students, so teachers will need to plan the appropriate level of support for working with all students.

Mindprint Expert Review

Author Andi McNair provides a step-by-step process of how to structure Genius Hour, or passion projects, in the classroom. She explains the purpose behind passion projects, and how to support students in implementing them in a way that allows them to use their time to pursue their interests and questions in a meaningful way. The book lays out a sequential process for the 6 P's of Genius Hour: Passion, Plan, Pitch, Project, Product and Presentation. Each chapter lays out a process for the P that includes an explanation as well as handouts. The book includes a helpful worksheet on the first, and perhaps most important P, how to find your passion. The Genius Hour planning form is also a helpful tool for teachers. The chapters include photographs and examples of the steps in action. Each chapter includes a "Quick Tips for Implementation" and "The Technology to Make it Happen". Genius Hour enables teachers to get the ideas and examples in a quick read, or by referencing specific sections at a time and understand how they can incorporate Genius Hour into their own classroom.
