Revoice and Restate Math Questions

If your student is reluctant to participate in math class

Teach It!

  1. Objective: Restating and rephrasing student's questions and/or comments in math will offer validation and help develop their mathematical communication skills.
  2. Teacher Takeaways: a) When a student comments or asks a question in math, take the opportunity to restate or rephrase the comment in order to validate what the student said and add in necessary clarity. This also provides you with an opportunity to model useful mathematical language. b) You also might ask students to repeat or rephrase one another's comments to promote student engagement and understanding. Make sure students' interpretations of what their peers are saying is accurate in order to avoid incorrect ideas being embedded in memory.

Why It Works (the Science Of Learning)!

Restating and rephrasing can build self-confidence in students as they hear their mathematical thinking validated. As students develop self-confidence they are more likely to actively participate in math discussions. When students recognize and articulate mathematical concepts, their understanding and appreciation for mathematics improves.
