LESSON: Nurture Growth Mindset

All students

Teach It!

  1. Objective:Teachers will learn what type of language to use to most effectively cultivate a growth mindset with ongoing encouragement and support.
  2. Teacher Takeaways: Students need to experience the rewards of taking risks and learning from mistakes. Teachers can provide opportunities for students to take risks without fear of being embarrassed or ruining their grade point average. Word choice is important, but so is sincerity. Praise effort and outcomes, but only if it is truly praiseworthy. Do not praise all effort and outcomes, or the praise will be less meaningful over time. Keep in mind that while teaching students about how the brain works is helpful, the reason is so that they develop an appreciation that they can overcome setbacks, not so they develop mastery of neuroscience or brain biology.
  3. Instruction/Activities: a)Watch & Discuss "TED Talk: J.K. Rowling" b)Class Culture of choice and leadership c) Class culture of celebrating risks d) Give grade-free assignments e) Provide balanced, specific feedback
