All students, particularly those who might be too focused on grades or what others think
Teach It!
Objective: Students will learn the importance of discovering their unique interests, passions, and reasons for learning so they can drive their own success.
Teacher Takeaways: Extrinsic motivators like a gold star or a good grade can be motivational for elementary students and ensure compliance. However, these types of motivators have decreasing effectiveness as students progress in school. Identifying and developing students' intrinsic motivators is far more likely to breed long-term self-confidence, enjoyment and success.
Instruction/Activities: a)Teacher-led discussion on extrinsic vs. intrinsic motivation b)Watch & Discuss "TED Talk: Logan LaPlant's Hackschooling Makes Me Happy" c) Writing Activity "My Interests & Passions" d) Class Brainstorm "Classroom Rules/Commandments" e) Student Activity "Choose An App" f) Choice Assignments
Intrinsic motivation is shown to be critical to long-term academic and life success, whereas the benefits of extrinsic motivators are shown to decline dramatically after elementary school.
