Support Organization and Focus (Remote Learning)

For students in remote learning, particularly those with weaker executive functions

What To Know

  1. Objective: Support students who struggle with following directions, organizational skills and follow-through in a remote learning setting.
  2. Students with weaker executive functions can feel easily overloaded with the extra demands of remote learning. Be clear and concise when modeling, giving guidance or instruction. Support students with structure, including predictable routines and a regular schedule.
  3. Telling them to do things usually doesn't work. Expect to show them how or do it with them several times before they begin to adopt new approaches independently.

How To Support

  1. Help students organize their work space and clean up on a regular basis.
  2. Set a consistent location for completing academic work, but incorporate change of location when possible for other activities (outdoors, bedroom, etc.)
  3. Don't let them multi-task. No electronics while doing school work. Remove all outside distractions.
  4. Use a daily planner and checklists to keep track of their assignments.
  5. Set a daily routine to ensure all assignments are done and in an order that will show their best work.
  6. Schedule stretch breaks a minimum of every 20 minutes.
  7. Provide a fidget toy for students who can't manage their energy.
  8. Teach students to recognize the signs that they are losing focus so they can manage their attention independently without adults constantly reminding them.
