What to Do When You Get Stuck

When you feel stuck in solving problems

Problem-solving Checklist

  1. After reading the question, give yourself at least three seconds to think before doing anything.
  2. Circle clue words in the question to help you figure out what it is asking and what to do.
  3. If you are still unsure, jot down or look for similarities and differences to other problems: How is this similar to other problems I've answered? What is different? What part of the problem makes me pause and why? What am I certain of? Where am I uncertain?
  4. Try to imagine what the answer could be or draw a picture to visualize.
  5. If you are feeling anxious or upset, skip the problem and come back to it with fresh eyes. Or relax your mind by closing your eyes and counting to five and try again.
  6. Once you have an answer, pause and ask yourself, "Does this make sense?" Always check that your answer is logical before moving on.

Making Decisions Checklist

  1. Think about how long you will spend when faced with a decision. For short papers or less important decisions, this shouldn't be long. For a major assignment or big decisions, give yourself more time and sleep on your choices.
  2. Brainstorm a list of options. Write down whatever comes to mind. Don't pre-judge.
  3. Decide on a few key criteria to evaluate the items on your list, such as availability of references, materials you might need, amount of time it is likely to take, etc.
  4. Review each item on the list based on the criteria and begin to eliminate choices. Consider ranking choices left.
  5. If there are still two or more options and you cannot decide, try asking someone else what they think and why. Remember, even if they sway you, it is only after you have narrowed the options to your best choices so you cannot go wrong.
  6. Try not to look back once you made your decision. Remind yourself you used a good process to decide.
