Pros

  • Keeps track of performance and progress for students and parents.

Considerations

  • Timed exercises may cause anxiety in some students.

Mindprint Expert Review

"Tap it." "Pinch it." Write it." The Dexteria app provides three ways for children to develop their fine motor skills and letter writing skills. Each exercise is timed and when time runs out, the student is scored. While the timed nature of the exercises may create anxiety for some children, this feature, as well as sounds that reinforce successful fine motor use, may help to keep students interested in the exercises. The app provides multiple levels for users and keeps track of performance. This is a wonderful, self-initiating app that children can use independently to improve fine motor and writing skills and confidence.

Manufacturer Description

Dexteria turns your iOS device into a therapeutic tool that improves fine motor skills and handwriting readiness in children and adults.

Dexteria’s unique hand and finger activities take full advantage of the iOS multi-touch screen to help build strength, control, and dexterity. The app's efficacy is supported by independent research studies, including a 2016 study by Huntington University published in the Journal of Hand Therapy.

• Increases coordination and motor control in the hands and fingers

• Works for kids and adults

• Automatically creates performance and usage reports that can be emailed

• Speeds recovery from injuries and stroke

• Designed in consultation with Occupational Therapists

• Turns the iPad into a therapeutic tool

For best therapeutic results the exercises should be done on a regular basis in short sessions. The exercises are designed to be repeatable and engaging.

The automatic tracking and reporting feature makes it easy for parents, teachers and occupational therapists to identify time on task and progress. You can email the progress reports right from the app itself.

Multi-user tracking is available as an in-app purchase. (Note to Volume Purchase Program customers: Consider buying Dexteria VPP instead. It includes multi-user tracking and you will pay a lower net cost than if you buy Dexteria and upgrade each copy via the in-app purchase. Just search "Dexteria VPP" in the app store.)
