Mindprint Expert Review

Pros

  • There is no timer and no limit on the number of moves, making this a potentially good option for students with weaker skills.
  • Graphics are simple yet engaging, with a variety of background themes including Valentine's Day, nature, Hell-o-ween, chalkboard, notebook, and sci-fi.
  • Players and parents can easily see progress including levels solved, solutions found, games played, and time spent.

Considerations

  • The free version includes many ads and promotions to upgrade.
  • Students with weaker working memory may struggle to remember hints which are shown and then disappear. Unlimited hints can be purchased.
  • The blocks are not drawn to scale, which can be confusing and frustrating for students who struggle with abstract reasoning or spatial perception.

Mindprint Expert Review

Doodle Fit is a simple yet fun visual puzzle app that develops working memory, visual discrimination, flexible thinking, spatial perception, and abstract reasoning skills. The free version has 410 levels and 8 themes and the upgrade has 100 additional puzzles, unlimited hints and no ads. Each puzzle is a simple, black outlined shape made from a combination of smaller odd-shaped blocks. Puzzle shapes start out with simple rectangles but become more interesting including aliens and buttons. The user is provided with the odd-shaped blocks and must drag them to their correct position to recreate the puzzle shape. Unfortunately, the odd-shaped blocks are not drawn to scale and re-size when they are placed on the puzzle. While this feature will strengthen spatial-perception, it adds an increased level of difficulty for those who really struggle with visualization. However, it is worth a try for even those with weaker visual skills, because there is no timer, no move counter, and students can move shapes around as much as they need. Hints are available and can be earned by solving additional puzzles or paying for an upgrade. Hints reveal the position of a single block combination, but then disappear. Players must remember what they saw and move the block themselves which will strengthen working memory, provided it does not become a source of frustration in which case parents might want to pay for unlimited hints. The annoying music and twitching board can be turned off in settings. Overall, this free app can be a great way to have fun strengthening a combination of skills, but parents should understand that students with weaker visual or working memory skills might find it too taxing. For those students that like playing, parents should consider upgrading to avoid the annoying advertisements.
