Mindprint Expert Review

Pros

  • Extensive sets of options allows parents to meet a student's specific needs (e.g. left-handedness, level of guidance/precision, person's voice).
  • App shows students how to finish a letter correctly even if they have stopped mid-way.
  • The playback feature allows adults and students to review the students' work.

Considerations

  • The degree of precision required is sometimes too much, particularly given the student is using a finger not a pencil.
  • Older elementary students who could benefit from the app will likely find the graphics juvenile.
  • The voice over, although helpful, can be too repetitious at times, yet there is no option for the student to repeat the audio as needed.

Mindprint Expert Review

This is an excellent app to help young students familiarize themselves with proper letter formation. There are three levels of difficulty starting with point-by-point guidance, writing with no guide, and precise letter formation (e.g. closing an o). The settings allow adults to customize the experience including contrast for visual weaknesses, verbal or non-verbal feedback, and adjustments for left-handers. In addition to upper and lower case letters and numbers, the app also has an option for spelling simple words so students can work on both their reading and spelling skills. The free version has all the features but a limited sample of numbers, letters, and words. Adults should realize that using one's finger will never substitute for practice with a paper and pencil. However, for parents who want to give their child practice with an app, iWriteWords is a great choice.
