Mindprint Rating

ELA: Writing Elementary School iOS App

Mindprint Expert Review

Pros

  • The home screen is engaging.
  • The app incorporates videos to teach concepts before asking a student to practice.

Considerations

  • The activities will not engage students.
  • Although it has "elementary grades" in the title, the majority of the contents is better suited for upper elementary or middle school.
  • The explanations provide insufficient information for students to learn from their mistakes and improve their skills.

Mindprint Expert Review

This app has so many flaws that very few students will benefit from using it. The home screen of the app looks fun and appealing with a clever illustration of "Graham R. Gnome". However, then the amount of information on any given screen quickly grows overwhelming beginning with the verb, pronoun and common core examples. Most elementary students will not have the patience or the knowledge to follow the videos in the Learn module. The other modules all effectively follow the same format which requires the student to distinguish the subject from the predicate or combine a subject and predicate to form a sentence. There are simply too many words on a page and the activities will be tedious for most students. The voice over is automated and unpleasant. Every incorrect response in a section will hear the same automated explanation which will not be very much help for students struggling with the concept. This app is unlikely to effectively engage or teach and may very well annoy or frustrate most students.
