Mindprint Expert Review

Pros

  • The stories are truly engaging and could easily ignite new interests in students.
  • The format provides an excellent opportunity for students to practice their listening comprehension but also has written transcripts available if needed.
  • A paid upgrade includes detailed lesson plans with study questions and activities for each story.

Considerations

  • The navigation is not straight-forward and users may have difficulty quickly finding what they want or returning to a particular place.
  • The stories were created for an adult audience and could use unfamiliar vocabulary and contextual references.
  • Adults may need to pre-screen topics for sensitive students who could be upset by some of the discussions.

Mindprint Expert Review

Listen Edition provides a curated collection of wonderful national public radio stories targeted for middle and high school students and organized around academic topics and Common Core skills. Parents and teachers can upgrade to track their stories and use custom lesson plans that include key points covered, discussion questions, class activities, homework, and links to additional resources and related topics. All stories include a transcript so students with weaker listening skills can read along while listening to the text. Almost all public radio stories are well-narrated, interesting, and provide an emotional element so that all ages and backgrounds can find the content interesting and relatable. However, the stories were originally created for a primarily adult audience so students may be exposed to some violence and disturbing topics if they are left to explore on their own. They also may have trouble with some of the contextual references and vocabulary and need adult supervision to help them understand. Overall, Listen Edition provides a good alternative approach to engage students in real world issues, but the use of materials originally intended for an adult audience may require parents to pre-screen materials for some students.
