Mindprint Expert Review

Pros

  • Detective theme will appeal to students who enjoy mysteries.
  • The app is challenging as many objects are difficult to find.

Considerations

  • Students will find that they tap on the correct object but it is not recognized.
  • Students may be unfamiliar with some of the objects they need to find.
  • Incorrect taps can receive disapproving looks from the police officer.

Mindprint Expert Review

Detective Holmes is a poorly designed hidden picture app with a detective theme. The goal is to help Detective Holmes find a stolen painting by identifying the hidden objects found in the room. While hidden picture games can be a very useful tool for helping students improve visual detail and discrimination skills, this app may be more frustrating than helpful. The introduction and explanation comic in the beginning passes too quickly for some students to read and absorb, and it uses improper grammar. The pictures students need to find will not always be obvious to them (e.g. weights are the metal weights one would use to balance a scale not exercise weights). An imprecise tap can lead to a student mistakenly thinking that the correct item was not found. When a student repeatedly taps a wrong object thinking it may be right, the police officer appears to chastise the player. Furthermore, all the items a student needs to find are not visible in the beginning. As a student finds an object another is added which can be demoralizing as a student does not know how many objects need to be found. While students who love detective stories may like this app, there are much better designed apps to choose.
