Mindprint Expert Review

Pros

  • The app includes a variety of problem types which forces students to think constantly.
  • The app covers a broad range of math skills from basic addition through early algebra.
  • The app encourages mental math using a timer and multiple choice answers.

Considerations

  • The app uses red X's and says "Failed!" when a student does not answer the 7 problems needed to progress.
  • The theme and design are somewhat odd and will not engage reluctant math students.
  • The app gives lots of encouragement to compare scores on leaderboards.

Mindprint Expert Review

King of Math is a very effective mental math app that forces students to look at math problems from a variety of perspectives. The app has 12 different sections ranging from simple addition to basic algebra and includes nine chapters in each section. Students can choose any section they want, but to progress to the next chapter a student must answer at least 7 of 10 multiple choice problems correctly. This app requires students to think quickly and flexibly by "mixing things up" at each level. In some cases, the student must pick the solution, in others the operation, in others, an operand, and in others, the smallest of the four equations. Students at all math levels can be easily challenged since scores and rewards are earned for both accuracy and speed. Each round starts with a 100,000 point countdown timer that begins as soon as the the round begins. The objective is to keep as many of the 100,000 points as possible, with points deducted for incorrect answers. There are virtual rewards and leaderboards in game center. Although the default is to show the timer, it is distracting and could make many students anxious; fortunately it can be hidden in the options. The rest of the design is simple and easy to read and the odd theme is easy to dismiss. What is difficult to ignore is the app gives red Xs and says "Failed" when a student is unable to pass the round. Otherwise, this app provides great mental math practice for upper elementary and middle school students.
