Mindprint Expert Review

Pros

  • Simple and attractive visuals.
  • Use of an abacus may be quite helpful for students who do better when math is made more tangible/visual.

Considerations

  • Uses large red X's for incorrect answers.
  • Easy to "get stuck" in the navigation and the only option is to quit the app.
  • Difficult to see the help when it is being provided.

Mindprint Expert Review

This beautiful looking app is unfortunately quite flawed. The free version includes 4 tutorials that starts with counting and ends with subtraction, all using a brightly colored abacus with large numbers. Correct answers are rewarded only with a big red circle and incorrect answers are admonished with a huge red X over the answer. There is an option for help, but help is provided by a barely visible shaking of the balls that need to move, which will be lost on students with any visual weaknesses. The app includes no sound or instruction and there is no easy way to exit a tutorial in the middle except to close the app. The fact that there are a few technical mistakes (e.g. hyphenating ten thousands and calling the ones place units) adds to the dissatisfaction. Given the target audience is most likely lower elementary schoolers, I would not recommend this app for most families.
