Mindprint Expert Review

Pros

  • The game is well designed, asking for only one part of speech on the screen at a time and offering a hint button for examples.
  • With 20 different stories to choose from in the app, the price tag is reasonable, especially compared to a print version which is difficult to re--use.
  • Depending on the story chosen, there is opportunity for students to learn about new things. For example, in the India app students read about the caste system.

Considerations

  • The hint words float across the screen a bit faster than they should and can be distracting for students with visual weaknesses.
  • Students can type in any word they choose and so there is no check on them selecting proper parts of speech if not playing with an adult.
  • MadLibs often devolves into inappropriate humor and the app allows users to type words without any restrictions.

Mindprint Expert Review

MadLibs is the ideal game to teach students parts of speech and to encourage students to read aloud. In this app version, the player picks one of 20 topics ranging from India to Little League Baseball and is asked one word at a time to type in 12 random parts of speech to fit into the story. The instructions explain the parts of speech and the hint button is available to reinforce and give a student examples if the student is playing alone. Students can save their completed stories. For students who do not like to read aloud, MadLibs is one of the best tools to encourage this important skill.
