Mindprint Expert Review

Pros

  • App has four different visually attractive fraction games that will appeal to children who like monsters.
  • The fractions are easy to read and problems are age appropriate.

Considerations

  • Game instructions and monster comments are lengthier than needed, use a challenging font, and cannot be read aloud.
  • The game objective is to feed junk food to the Squeebles and avoid a mean Math Monster which gives math a negative image.
  • For more difficult problems revolving adding and then reducing fractions, there is no scratch pad and no help for students who need it.

Mindprint Expert Review

Squeebles Fractions is a visually inviting game for students learning fractions, but it is not very fun and has several negative features that parents should consider. There are 4 mini games using fractions with virtual dessert prizes with the ultimate goal to avoid the “Math Monster”. In A Piece of Cake, the student must give the Squeeble the correct fraction of the cake. The second game is a matching game to choose pairs of equivalent fractions. The third game requires comparing fractions and dragging the cake to the the bigger fraction. The fourth game requires adding fractions and selecting the correct multiple choice answer. On the positive side, all games have two difficulty levels, the numbers are easy to read, and there are prizes and a break activity for answering questions correctly. On the negative side, there are red X’s for incorrect answers, no hint or help button, no scratch pad to reduce fractions, multi-sentence directions and comments that cannot be read aloud, and a math monster that sometimes says “Maybe I should make [them] a little easier" for incorrect answers. Parents who do not want to encourage junk food and mean comments and want to avoid a negative connotation for math may want to avoid this app but it does provide age appropriate fraction practice.
