Mindprint Expert Review

Pros

  • Uses good visual clues to help students remember groups and practical uses for each element.
  • Wrong answers simply bounce back and user continues until all of the elements have been correctly placed.
  • Students can always tap on an element to see the correct answer if they forget.

Considerations

  • The moving elements, tiny pictures and font, and on-screen timer may be uncomfortable for students with weaker visual skills.
  • The screen often freezes at the end of the game before the student has the opportunity to register a name on the leaderboard and there is no other way to track student progress.
  • Though the app can be great for initial learning, students cannot test their full knowledge of the table. They can never hide the colors, element names or atomic numbers and test themselves.

Mindprint Expert Review

Oresome Elements is good app which uses a fun visual approach to help students start to learn and memorize the element symbols and locations on the periodic table. Students begin by choosing from three levels: level one includes the first 20 elements, level two practices the first 30 elements, and level three includes all elements. The screen is the periodic table and each element has the name, atomic number, and a picture to associate with the element. Element symbols float at the top inside colorful circles that match their group on the table. This combination of pictures and visual cues can be very helpful in aiding recall for students. The student uses a finger to draw a path from the element to its appropriate location on the table. Students can always tap the element on the table for the answer/correct symbol and double tap for more information. For example, Helium has a picture of balloons, and double tapping reveals that it is a gas, has colorless and conductive properties, and 2 protons. There is a large on-screen timer, but students use as much time as necessary to correctly match the elements. The app is colorful and enjoyable and a relatively fun way for students to learn and practice their knowledge of the periodic table.

Manufacturer Description

Oresome Elements is an interactive game that makes learning about the periodic table, elements and some of their properties and uses fun.
The game is aimed at secondary school students, but is just as much fun for anyone wanting to learn about elements and the periodic table.

All known chemical matter is composed of elements. In this periodic table 109 elements are identified alongside some of their properties and uses. Many of these elements form the building blocks of the minerals and fossil fuels that are extracted and processed for our everyday use.

How to play the game:
1). Tap one of the three levels to challenge you.
Level 1 is the first 20 elements in the periodic table
Level 2 is the first 30 elements in the periodic table
Level 3 is all the elements in the periodic table

2). Drag a floating element symbol and draw a path to its correct place on the periodic table. The element will then follow the path you have chosen. If the element follows a path to the correct location it docks, otherwise it returns back to the floating area. Do this for all remaining floating elements.
Careful to not make floating elements collide!

3). When all of the floating elements are in the correct location on the periodic table that game is finished. If you have the best time you can enter your name on the leader board.

Other features:
There is a settings button on the top right hand corner. In settings you can reduce or increase the speed of the elements moving along their path which might improve your time.
If you need some more clues or want to see more information about the elements close up, single tap OR double tap an element in the periodic table.
