Mindprint Expert Review

Pros

  • This game provides a great opportunity for children to learn new vocabulary and to express themselves.
  • This game is fun and appealing to children as well as adults.
  • When played with an adult, this game can be used as a tool to teach cooperation and emotional control.

Considerations

  • Balderdash is not as much fun when playing with only two people.
  • The game requires writing so it would not be enjoyable for children who find writing exercises too taxing.
  • The game assumes prior knowledge with no look up option or further explanation so children with limited general knowledge may get frustrated playing this game.

Mindprint Expert Review

This is a fun game where children are exposed to new and unusual vocabulary words. A card is drawn that contains a word that almost no one has ever heard of before. For every round, one player has the chance to be the judge (dasher) who reads a word aloud and the other players write down what they think the word means. Players try to bluff each other by creating phony definitions or they may try to guess the real definition. Then, the actual definition is mixed with the made-up ones and players vote as to which they believe is the correct definition. This game can be useful for students to improve expressive language skills and verbal reasoning. Game play requires cooperation and lends itself to argument (players vote for best definitions), so unless played with an adult this game is not recommended for children who have difficulty controlling emotions. Players write down their definitions, so this game may not be enjoyable for children for whom writing is a challenge. Overall, Balderdash is an enjoyable way to learn new vocabulary words, improve verbal skills, and use creativity.
