Mindprint Expert Review

Pros

  • Five Crowns looks more fun than a regular deck of cards with bright colors and pictures.
  • Five Crowns is easy to learn but can be competitive and challenging.
  • Can be played with a broad age range of players.

Considerations

  • The last three rounds start with 10+ cards per player, which can be too much to hold for smaller children.
  • Later rounds may be too taxing on working and short-term memory for younger players or even older children with weaker skills.

Mindprint Expert Review

Five Crowns is an easy to learn yet challenging card game. This game provides a fun twist on gin rummy, with more cards and slightly more complex rules. The deck for Five Crowns uses five suits, and there are no twos or aces. In the first round, players receive three cards. Each subsequent round starts with one additional card. Wild cards change with each round, so players must mentally keep track of the right wild card as well as the discard pile. Like many card games, Five Crowns provides a good opportunity to help students improve their flexible thinking, attention, and working memory skills, though parents should always be cautious that these games can cause frustration for students with weaker skills. Five Crowns could be particularly difficult given the later rounds have 10+ cards to manage. Overall, Five Crowns is a good option for families looking for a fresh alternative card game, but not everyone will find it unique enough to be worth purchasing.
