Pros

  • Children play this game as part of a team and can learn new vocabulary words and spelling from other players.
  • The team works together to decide on the best word so there is no pressure on an individual player.
  • Students must think of words quickly, so this game is helpful to improve processing speed for some students.

Considerations

  • Students who are less confident in their ideas or speaking skills may feel uncomfortable strategizing aloud with a team.
  • Students who have listening challenges may feel overloaded processing all the answers from their teammates.
  • Teams must work cooperatively and agree on the best word, which can be the source of disagreements.

Mindprint Expert Review

This is a fun, team game that helps students improve vocabulary, flexible thinking and spelling skills. The game board has a tile with each letter of the alphabet down the middle and two lanes on either side. Two teams take turns choosing a category card, thinking of a word in the category, and spelling the word by moving its letters one lane closer to them. The goal is to be the first team to move eight letters off the board, keeping in mind that the other team will try to stop them while also trying to win. Each team works cooperatively to come up with the best word which typically includes longer words, words with double letters, and words that have the specific letters the team needs to win. Even weaker spellers can feel comfortable suggesting words and will improve their spelling as they work with their teammates to spell the word correctly. Categories are familiar to students and include topics such as insects, languages and sports. Word on the Street is a fun, competitive family word game that helps students develop skills without the pressure of individual performance.
