Mindprint Expert Review

Pros

  • Will help students with numerical fluency as they are constantly making judgments and may need to add numbers in their heads
  • Adding scores at the end of each round requires math calculations of two and three digit numbers in one's head and on paper

Considerations

  • Most people need a few games/rounds to really understand it, and younger students may not have the patience
  • Younger students who are less comfortable with numbers may not like this game
  • Playing by all the rules in the instructions (e.g. a two minute time limit per turn) will make this game unnecessarily complicated for beginning players

Mindprint Expert Review

Rummikub is a classic game that will help students work on numeracy and strategy without feeling like they are being forced to do math work. Each player starts with 14 numbered tiles that come in 4 different colors. The object of the game is similar to card rummy; be the first to use all of your tiles with the highest score by making groups (3 or 4 tiles of the same number but different color) or runs (3 or more consecutive numbers all of the same color). Players can "build" on other players’ groups and runs. Students that do well in this game are good at scanning, considering probabilities to make their own versus build on others, and calculating scores in their heads. This game offers many different opportunities to develop numerical fluency for students who are engaged and really want to win. Students who do not take a liking to the game are more apt to find it tedious and not much fun.

Manufacturer Description

It's no surprise that Rummikub is so popular - it has all the elements that make a great game: it's easy to learn and fast moving, it's different every time it's played, it combines luck and strategy, and it changes quickly so every player has a chance to win until the very end. Players take turns placing numbered tiles in runs (consecutive numbers of the same color) and groups (three or more of the same number in different colors), Rummy style. It's easy to learn, but packed with strategy - the "board" changes all the time as players adjust the tiles on the table. The Joker tiles add to the fun and can be played as any color or number. Be the first player to play every tile on your rack to win! Rummikub is ideal for people of different ages to play together, and reinforces STEM and STEAM concepts such as sequencing, pattern recognition, and planning skills. This set includes 106 playing tiles with bright over-sized numbers, 4 plastic tile-holder racks, and complete instructions. For 2-4 players, ages 8 and up.
