Yahtzee Classic is an enjoyable, multi-player dice game that, when played with a helpful adult, can develop academic skills including addition and pattern skills, and cognitive skills including working memory, flexible thinking, and attention. Players take turns rolling five dice aiming for combinations that will give the highest score. There are 13 potential combination categories which include all ones, twos, etc. and patterns including full house, straights, or the ultimate “yahtzee” which is 5 of a kind. Players will need to focus and juggle potential combinations in their minds as they make decisions. When all players have completed and recorded their scores in the 13 categories, they total their scores and the highest tally wins the game. Planning, flexible thinking, numeracy and luck will help earn a higher score as players must choose the best potential combinations of dice from three rolls per turn.There is no limit to the number of players, no timer, no reading involved, and an element of luck, so this game can be enjoyable for children of different ages to play together. However, adults may want to support younger students as they first learn the game and subsequently think through the potential combinations, begin to understand probabilities, and make good decisions on which combination to go for. For extra learning, elementary students can practice their multi-digit addition by totaling the scores at the end of the game. Yahtzee is unlikely to be an absolute favorite, but it is an enjoyable family game that provides good opportunities for learning.
