Mindprint Expert Review

Pros

  • Does not require the skill and experience of chess but engages many of the same higher order thinking skills that chess develops.
  • Newer versions of the game offer optional additional levels of complexity for children who become "Stratego buffs" so this game will easily hold the attention of children and adults.
  • This is a wonderful game for parents to work with their children to teach strategy and reasoning skills.

Considerations

  • Students who have visual and/or auditory short--term memory weaknesses are likely to struggle recalling how different pieces can move on the board and where their opponents pieces are which may be frustrating.
  • The amount of words and design on the game board are likely to be distracting for students with visual discrimination weaknesses.
  • The game is not visually appealing to students that are not interested in fighting armies because the colors are bland and not generally inviting.

Mindprint Expert Review

Stratego is a great classic board game of chess meets capture the flag. Players start the game by strategically organizing 3 rows of “army warriors” in what they believe will be the optimal way to protect their own flag while positioning themselves to discover the opponent’s flag. Warriors have different numerical values and characteristics about how they can move and which of their opponents’ pieces they can capture. Players must pay careful attention to their own pieces as well as their opponents’ moves, making this one of the best board games for strategic thinking and visual abstract reasoning as well as visual-spatial perception. Conversely, children with weaknesses in visual and/or verbal working memory and visual detail analysis will likely find the game overwhelming and/or frustrating, particularly at the lower end of the recommended age range. This is one of those games that can be fantastic when played with two interested and engaged players.
