Mindprint Expert Review

Pictionary is a fun multi-player game of “drawing charades” enabling students to develop a variety of skills including vocabulary, general knowledge, reasoning and attention to detail. Teams of two compete to see who can reach the finish first, so adults should be sure teams are well paired to avoid disagreements. A player rolls the die and moves a pawn to the colored space representing one of four categories. A player reads the word on the card for that category and has one minute to draw the word/phrase without using numbers or letters while the partner guesses. In instances of “all play” all teams compete simultaneously to see which team can draw and guess the correct answer first. Although some of the words may not be part of younger children’s vocabulary, adults can play with a child and use the opportunity to explain unknown terms and allow the child to pick an alternate card. The use of the timer is somewhat mitigated because the game is team-based. For some words, students must use flexible thinking and reasoning skills to “lead” the player to the correct answer when a drawing is not so obvious (e.g. phrase such as “around”). Overall, Pictionary is a great family game for all ages that allows reinforcement of important skills in a fun and competitive way without any visual overload.
