Mindprint Expert Review

Pros

  • A good game to work on visual processing speed and visual working memory, even for children who have visual discrimination/detail weaknesses.
  • It is easy for an adult to slow down to build a child's confidence without the child realizing it.
  • Game can be used to improve skills regardless of reading ability.

Considerations

  • As with most competitive games where speed is an issue, children with anxiety, emotional control, or social issues should probably play this game with good adult supervision to avoid conflict.
  • Although the creators did a good job making the pictures distinguishable, ideally they would have used brighter colors and a bit more variety in their colors to make differentiation even easier.
  • Students with weak motor skills may have difficulty picking up piles of cards and moving them quickly enough to be competitive.

Mindprint Expert Review

Ruckus is a fun, multi-player card game that will develop students’ visual and memory skills. Each player is dealt 7 cards, each of which has one of 12 silly symbols (e.g. fish man, eye box). The goal is to collect the most cards by laying down a set of your own and/or “stealing” your opponent’s set if you have the same card in your hand. Play continues until someone puts down all of his cards but the winner is the one with the most cards. It is fun and easy to play after a practice round and is good to teach children how to quickly scan information while keeping track of what is in their own hands and on the table. For the most part, the pictures are dissimilar enough that they will not pose an issue for students, although students with motor weaknesses may get frustrated given the importance of speed. The stack of cards is easy to keep around for five minutes of good entertainment or much longer.
