Mindprint Expert Review

Pros

  • Bop It is just a simple, fun game that can be fun as a single player game for students who need to work on their listening and motor skills.
  • Children of different ages can enjoy playing this game together, especially given the variety of options for gameplay.
  • The multi-player modes offer a unique way to teach children social skills like taking turns, sharing, and cooperation.

Considerations

  • Some children may find the voice, noises, constant background beat, and comments irritating.
  • Players must respond quickly and accurately to the voice command and there is no option to have the commands repeated, so students with slower processing skills may find this toy frustrating.
  • The tone of the voice is deliberately obnoxious to humor and engage children. "You're out!" "Too fast for you?" which may be great for some but de-motivating for others.

Mindprint Expert Review

Bop It is an engaging hand-held electronic game that can help a child improve listening skills, motor coordination and cooperation. The toy weighs under one pound and is less than a foot long. Players must follow instructions from a voice command to pull, twist, or bop (hit) the toy in a specific spot in random orders. There is also an optional "shout" command where the player must shout into the microphone. This toy can be equally fun as a single or multi-player game. As a player improves, the patterns become more complicated and the game goes faster. Bop It can be played on three levels and players can choose from three games (Solo, Party, or Pass It). In "Solo" mode, an individual player will follow Bop It's random commands trying to beat the high score which is announced at the end of each turn. The "Pass It" game is for two or more players where players are commanded to "pass" the toy after completing a turn. You are "out" in "Pass It" when you make a mistake, and the last player left is the winner. The "Party" game is also for 2 or more players where instead of the "bop it" command the toy calls out body parts like "knee" or "shoulder." The maximum score for each level is 100, and achieving that score unlocks the next level. At the "novice" level, there are only random voice commands for the player to follow. In the "expert" level, Bop It will mix voice commands with sound effects (e.g. the drum sound means "bop it" and the "whistle" means pull it). The "master level" will provide random voice and sound effect commands as well as color commands (e.g. white means "bop it", yellow means "twist it"). The audio is understandable and the volume can be adjusted (quiet, loud, or blasting). The voice may be engaging for some, but irritating or distracting to those with auditory weaknesses. Bop It can be a motivating tool to improve listening skills when played independently and at an appropriate level. However, for a student with difficulties listening closely and following directions, it may be more frustrating than fun, particularly with the negative feedback.
