Pros

  • This game can be fun and competitive with a broad age range of children.
  • When not played competitively, this game is a great way to strengthen a variety of visual skills.
  • This game can help students develop inhibition as they resist shouting out sets before they find them.

Considerations

  • When not used as a teaching tool, SET is fast-paced and competitive and may be a poor choice for students with a range of weaknesses.
  • Students with attention or inhibition weaknesses may not have the patience needed to play this game cooperatively.

Mindprint Expert Review

This is a terrific card game that develops a variety of visual skills including speed, attention, working memory, and patience. The dealer places twelve cards face up. Cards differ in object color, shape, shading, and number of objects. Players simultaneously compete to be the first to see and grab a set of three cards which all match on a single characteristic or all differ on all characteristics. When played with a patient adult, this is an excellent game to help children develop attention to detail, processing speed, and working memory skills as well as patience as they suppress the urge to call out a match before they have one. When played competitively, children with weaknesses in these skills could grow discouraged quickly. In addition, children with auditory or motor weaknesses may dislike the constant shouting of answers and grabbing of cards. These aspects can also cause arguments among competitive players if there is not an impartial judge. SET is a simple yet great game, but parents should play with children with a clear consideration of their needs in certain skills.
