Advance Preparation for Class Participation

If your student struggles to participate in class discussions

How To Apply It!

  1. While doing your homework, write out questions or key points. Practice reading them out loud.
  2. Keep your notes or questions on three-by-five cards so you can easily refer to them during class.
  3. Be sure that you are using your prepared questions at the appropriate point in class discussion and not just "trying to get them in".
  4. If you're still feeling nervous, you or your parents can talk with teachers who might be willing to give you advance notice for questions they want you to answer in class. The goal is to get you comfortable speaking and this can be a great solution.

Why It Works (the Science Of Learning)!

The more a student participates in class, the more comfortable that student is likely to grow raising his hand and giving an impromptu answer. By providing these students with way to participate successfully with advance preparation they are more likely to be successful and want to participate over time.
